Pushing the Boundaries of Lace: My Functional QR Code in Lace
As a lace maker, I’ve always been drawn to pushing the boundaries of what this intricate art form can do. My current project “Rolls of Thread”, a fully functional QR code made from lace, is a perfect example of blending traditional technique and modern technology.
The Process: Combining Bobbin and Needle Lace
The QR code is composed of two distinct lace techniques: bobbin lace for the background and needle lace for the code itself. I knew the precision needed would be critical because a QR code requires absolute accuracy to function. Each needle lace block in the code had to be made individually and stitched into place on the bobbin lace background with incredible care. If any piece was even slightly off, the code would fail to scan!
I started by breaking up the code into manageable shapes. I printed many patterns and backed each one with fabric, so I could work the needle lace. QR codes are black scannable elements on a light background. So, that’s what I chose to do too. There are thousands of tiny dark stitches in the QR code. It took some time, but I finished the first element.
Next, I created a bobbin lace pattern for the background that was interesting, but would not interfere with the readability of the QR code. Once the bobbin lace was complete, the needle lace pieces were carefully assembled, one geometric piece at a time, and secured to the background. This was a challenge, since I left most of the pins in the bobbin lace, so I wouldn’t pull the lace out of shape.
The Challenge: Precision Meets Creativity
This project took finesse. Every careful stitch mattered. The placement of each piece had to be perfect so that the structure held its form. When the final element was in place and the QR code scanned successfully, I felt incredibly relieved. This project wasn’t just about making a functional object—it was about showing how lace, something typically seen as delicate and impractical, could be used in an entirely new way.
Why It Matters: Lace Can Do More
This is only the beginning. Lace is an art form that can go beyond doilies and decoration. It can interact with technology, spark curiosity, and—most importantly—inspire creativity. Combining traditional techniques and modern design, can reshape how people see lace and what it’s capable of.
