Making Plarn

plastic bag

My plan is to install the finished bobbin lace in a nearby park, so I need something that will hold up outside. The bobbin lace making material I chose was plarn. The yarn is often made from grocery bags, but other types of plastic could be used. Online pickup order bags seemed perfect because the plastic was thicker than regular grocery bags.

Here are the steps to make plarn: Flatten out the grocery bag.

cutting the bottom of the plastic bag

Cut open the bottom.

Cut along the outside of the side seams on the bottom and top.

cutting on either side of the seam of the plastic bag

Flatten the bag again.

Cut off the bottom and top, to make a long smooth rectangle.

Fold the bag in half, twice. I used bulldog clips to hold the bag in place. Otherwise, it shifted, causing the strips to be uneven.

Cut the bag into 1/2 inch strips.

Open a strip and cut along one seam. This creates one long 1/2 inch plastic strip.

Now the strips need to be linked to make the required length to work the project. Make a slit in one end of a strip and place the end of another strip through the hole.

I took it one step further by hot gluing the ends down. As I mentioned before, the bag I used was thicker, so the hot glue did not melt the plastic. Depending on the type of plastic used, please be careful that you do not melt the plastic or burn yourself.
